Bay Hosts Public Discussion on Campus Sustainability Initiatives

Bay College’s Math Science Division presents a special colloquia on Campus Sustainability Initiatives.  The free presentation will be at 4PM on Thursday February 16 in room 125 of the Math Science Building.   The presentation can be seen live via iTV at 3PM central time in room 107 of Bay College’s West Campus in Iron Mountain. 

Sustainability is often thought of in the context of biological and environmental systems and their ability to remain diverse and productive. But, sustainability is so much more than that and in today’s world we have to think about it in much broader terms. In 1987 the United Nations defined sustainability as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the well-being of future generations”. Although this is still true today, the definition continues to expand and in 2000, the Earth Charter defined sustainability to include the idea of a “global society founded on respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice, and a culture of peace”, which is often referred to as “the three legs of a stool”; environmental protection, social responsibility, and economic viability. The idea being that without all three legs the stool cannot stand. As our world population continues to grow and we compete for limited resources it is more important than ever we recognize the importance of and work toward a sustainable future… each and every business or person can make a difference.
So, what is Bay College doing to shape a more sustainable future? Chris Williams, Vice President of Operations, will lead a discussion about projects Bay College has done and is doing to reduce energy consumption.  Join the conversation and learn about changes you can make at home or your local business that can make a difference.
