Strings on the Bay Concludes its Season with Maiden Voyage

Strings on the Bay, the summer chamber music series sponsored by Bay College, concludes its 2016 season with a concert at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, August 9th, at First Presbyterian Church, 819 1st Avenue South. This final program of the summer features the “True North Quartet,” a string quartet group from the Ann Arbor area, playing a program entitled “Maiden Voyage.” Violinists Paul Lundin and Karen Donato, cellist Daniel Thomas and violist Joseph Deller return for their seventh year playing together for Strings on the Bay.

Featured on this concert is Franz Schubert’s Quartet in D Minor subtitled “Death and the Maiden.” It bears this title because one of its movements uses the melody from a song he wrote having that same name. It is widely considered one of the greatest string quartets in the literature. Joachim Raff’s Quartet #7 with a subtitle also shared by a Schubert song—“The Maid of the Mill”—is also to be performed. This quartet is in six short movements and is programmatic in form, meaning it tells the story of a young man meeting a girl, falling in love and, well, you will have to hear the concert to find out what happens!

The concert is followed by a reception with light refreshments offering patrons an opportunity to visit with the performers.  Tickets for this performance are available on the Bay College website, at the Besse Center box office or at the door of the church. Admission is $5 for students and faculty and $10 for adults.
