Matt Johnson hired to Lead Athletics at Bay College
Matt Johnson has been hired to serve as Director of Athletics and Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Bay College.  Matt began his duties on Monday, June 27th.

Matt brings over 11 years of Coaching and Athletic/Sports Management experience to this position.
Matt began his career as the assistant women’s basketball coach at Macalester College in St. Paul, MN and was quickly awarded multiple coaching opportunities at Hibbing Community College in Hibbing, MN. In 7 seasons there, he coached men’s & women’s golf as well as served as Head Coach to the men’s basketball team.  His teams qualified for 5 NJCAA Region XIII Tournaments and were MCAC North Divisional Champions in 2012, Matt was awarded MCAC Coach of the year that same season.  Most recently, Matt was the men’s and women’s golf coach and assistant men’s basketball coach at Saint Mary’s University in Winona, MN.  In addition to Matt’s successful coaching career, he has a strong knowledge of how to manage the day-to-day operations of an athletic program.

Matt is originally from Gladstone and a graduate of Gladstone High School.  He, his wife, and their two children recently moved back to the area. Matt is the Camp Director/Owner of Great Northern Basketball and coordinates many basketball camps throughout the region.

Bay College announced earlier this spring the addition of an athletic program, to begin in the fall of 2017, providing intercollegiate competition for students in women’s and men’s sports.  The College will compete as a member of Region XIII within the NJCAA.

The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), is the governing body of two-year college athletics, offering endless athletic and academic opportunities to college students. It is the second largest national intercollegiate athletic organization in the United States with over 500 member schools in 43 states. Each year over 50,000 student-athletes compete in one of 28 different sports and the organization sponsors 48 national championship events and nine football bowl games each year.
