Local TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) students are working to give back to their community by celebrating the annual National TRiO Day of service. The TRIO Club at Bay College will be participating by volunteering their efforts at St. Vincent de Paul’s warehouse from 9am to 12pm on Friday, February 26th
All Bay College staff and students are welcome to join the TRIO Staff and Peer Mentors while they work in the St. Vincent de Paul warehouse and assist staff with cleaning, organizing, and preparing items for sale at the downtown store. Lunch will be provided for those who participate following the work session.
TRIO Student Support Services is a federally funded program aimed at improving the graduation and retention rates of first-generation and low income students and individuals with disabilities. According to a 1986 Congressional Resolution, the National TRIO Day of Service is aimed at focusing the nation’s attention on the needs of TRIO students who aspire to improve their lives through education and service. Says TRIO Director, Jill Wiese Martin, “This is a great opportunity to give back to the community as a way of ‘paying it forward’ for the service, grant aid, and support provided by the Student Support Services program. It will also connect our staff and students to the bigger community of SSS students all over the country who will also be contributing to this effort.”
TRIO Club provides Bay College SSS students the opportunity to get to know other students and to develop leadership skills through the planning of educational, cultural, service, and social activities for both TRIO students and friends of TRIO.
