207                 HIRING PART-TIME FACULTY POLICY

The Bay de Noc Community College Board of Trustees acknowledges the importance of instructors with less than full load assignments as a necessary and valuable resource in fulfilling the mission and purpose of the college.

The administration is charged with the responsibility of making provisions to ensure that the valuable contribution of part-time instructors is recognized as a significant factor in the total college effort.

The administration is expected to provide proper selection, orientation, support, evaluation, communication, and appreciation to further this general Board position.

It will be the responsibility of the administrator in charge to implement the following procedures.  Part-time instructors will be hired according to the following guidelines:

PROCEDURE:

207.1  All individuals interested in teaching for Bay College must submit a completed application for employment, cover letter, resume, original transcripts and a “Qualified to Teach” form to Human Resources prior to being considered for a position

207.2 Assignment of part-time instructors shall be done in accordance with the part-time instructor’s labor agreement.  In addition, persons filling clinical positions in the Division of Allied Health must be currently registered to practice nursing in the State of Michigan and/or Wisconsin and must have a minimum of one year of clinical experience.

A pool of qualified applicants will be forwarded to the hiring dean when an opening becomes available.  To be qualified for a part-time position, all applicants must complete a Bay College application form, supply a cover letter, resume, and original transcript copies.  These materials will be sent to the human resources office and housed there until an opening is available.  The hiring dean will contact HR to request applicant materials and fill positions from the existing pool.  If it is necessary to advertise openings, HR will advertise the position(‘s), collect applicant materials and then forward them to the appropriate dean.  The appropriate dean will screen applicant materials and interview candidates most appropriate for the position.  Part-time faculty applications will only be active for one year.

207.3  All new instructors are required to attend at least one hour of orientation, given by the appropriate Dean or their designee.  This orientation will cover the following topics:

a. Purpose, goals, and objectives.

b. College

c. Program

d. Course

e. Clinical Agency (if applicable)

207.4  Faculty responsibilities are as follows:

a. Use course syllabi, textbooks, and outlines (if applicable), which are established by the division.

b. Determine testing procedures, student assessment, assignments, and other appropriate activities.

 c. Enforcement of appropriate policies and procedures.

 d. Keeping appropriate attendance and grade records.

e. Orientation prior to clinical nursing courses regarding procedure and policy of each affiliating agency

207.5  The Human Resources Office will be informed of the person selected by written contract stating the amount that will be paid for services.  The teaching contract will be prepared by the hiring Dean or their designee.  All new part-time faculty are required to complete and return the appropriate tax forms, I-9 with appropriate I.D., and drug-free workplace form, which are available from the HR web page.

The Vice President of Student Services will be informed of the selection of the instructor for each position.
