 218                 TERMINATION OF EMPLOYMENT POLICY

It is the policy of the Bay de Noc Community College Board of Trustees to terminate employment because of an employee’s resignation, discharge, or retirement; the expiration of an employment contract; or permanent reduction in the workforce. Discharge can be for any reason not prohibited by law.  In the absence of a specific written agreement, employees are free to resign at any time, and the college reserves the right to terminate employment for any reason.

 PROCEDURE:

218.1 If the employee resigned, obtain a written letter of resignation.  If termination was initiated by the College, state such in a letter to the employee.  In either case, a final date of employment should be identified.

218.2  An exit interview, conducted by Human Resources, should be set up with the employee before his/her last day of employment.  A written summary from the exit interview should be placed in the employee’s personnel file.

218.3  A memorandum identifying the employee’s last date of employment should be sent to the Human Resources Office and a copy should be in the employee’s personnel file.

218.4  All keys, equipment, supplies, LRC materials and other college property must be returned to their supervisor, accounted for, and on college property before the employee receives his/her last paycheck.

218.5  All personal property of the employee must be removed from the college before the employee receives his/her last paycheck.

218.6   Teaching faculty have ten (10) calendar days after the end of the semester or their date of resignation (whichever comes first) to remove all their personal property from the college and return all college-owned materials.

218.7  The last paycheck will be available to the employee at the next regularly scheduled pay period after the resignation.

218.8   Teaching faculty will furnish their Dean with copies of grades from their grade books for up to the past three academic years.

218.9 Personnel files for employees who are terminating employment will be sent to Human Resources.

218.10 The Director of Human Resources will respond in writing only to those reference check inquiries that are submitted in writing.  Responses to such inquiries will confirm only dates of employment, wage rates, and position(s) held.  No employee data will be released without authorization and release signed by the individual who is subject of the inquiry.
