219                 RETIREMENT POLICY

It shall be the policy of the Bay de Noc Community College Board of Trustees that employees are eligible for normal retirement on the first day of the month following the month in which they reach age 65.  Non-tenured employees who desire to continue working past age 65 may do so. Tenured faculty member's retirement shall be governed by state or federal law and/or collective bargaining agreements

PROCEDURE:

219.1  Filing retirement application forms is the individual responsibility of the employee.  The college officers are in general very helpful to the retiring person, but the responsibility for filing applications does not rest with the college.

219.2  Members planning to retire are encouraged to make application four or five months in advance of the time they wish to start receiving an allowance.  Application forms may be obtained by phoning or writing the Retirement Office, or by a personal visit to the Lansing Office.  Michigan Public School Employee’s Retirement System, P.O. Box 30026, Lansing, MI 48909  (517) 373-0650.  Those employees who are in the optional retirement program, are responsible for contacting TIAA/CREF at 730 Third Avenue, New York, NY 10017-3206, 800 842-2888.

219.3  Retirement allowances are effective the first of the month following the month in which the member has satisfied the age and service requirements to begin receiving an allowance, has terminated his/her Michigan public school work, and has returned the completed application forms to the Retirement Office.  Generally, the first check is received within a three-month period after all the completed retirement forms are returned to the retirement office.  The college has no authority to set or interpret MPSERS or TIAA/CREF rules.

219.4  All written requests for information should include the member’s social security number, date of birth, and surname under which the person was employed.

Retiree Medical Insurance Coverage:

Retirees and beneficiaries who elect to take the coverage are enrolled in the Michigan Public School Employees’ Retirement Group #59000, often referred to as the Blue Cross-Blue Shield “Master Health Care Plan.”  The coverage is not automatic; you must apply for it.  It is available to anyone receiving a retirement allowance from the Michigan Public School Employees’ Retirement System.  No coverage is paid by the state except under the Master Health Care Plan (Blue Cross-Blue Shield).

Those retirees who are a part of TIAA/CREF are not eligible for the Michigan Public School Employees' retirement group #59000.  Individuals in TIAA/CREF should seek their own health insurance coverage.
