EDUCATIONAL BENEFITS POLICY
It shall
be the policy of the Bay de Noc Community College
Board of Trustees to grant tuition scholarships to spouses and dependents of
full-time college employees for any classes taken at Bay de Noc
Community College.
Benefits
shall be pro-rated for less than full-time employees and their dependents
according to the hours worked.
PROCEDURE:
515.1 The employee’s spouse and dependent children shall be granted
free tuition for credit classes that are offered by Bay de Noc Community College. In addition, fees, which
generate revenue (registration, technology & assessment)
will be waived. Course specific or pass through fees for individual
classes are not waived. Dependent children are eligible for this benefit
until they reach their 24th birthday. If the 24th birthday is reached
after the start of classes in any session, the free tuition policy will apply.
515.1a Dependent children are defined as: (1) the employee’s unmarried
child(ren), stepchild(ren),
foster child(ren), sibling or stepsibiling,
or a descendant of one of these; (2) who have the same principal residence as
the employee for more than half the tax year. An exception exists for
child(ren) (by birth or adoption) of divorced or
separated parents when that parent is also the employee; (3) do not exceed 24
years of age; and (4) did not provide more than one-half of his/her her
own support for the year
515.2 No reimbursement
will be granted for travel expenses, meals or other personal expenses
reimbursed by another source such as scholarships, grants, fellowships,
veterans' benefits, gifts and donations.
515.3 No compensatory
time, overtime, or other consideration will be granted to employees taking
job-related courses or other courses not required as a condition of employment.
515.4 When an educational
course is required as a condition of employment, the travel policies and
procedures of the Board will govern.
515.5 Non-exempt
employees may take any class or classes offered by Bay de Noc
Community College provided there is no conflict with his/her assignment, and
with the approval of their administrator.
515.6 Less than full-time
employees are covered under the provisions of Section 507.
515.7 Dependents of
deceased or retired employees shall continue to receive benefits through the
current semester for which they have enrolled but are not entitled to benefits
thereafter, except as determined by provisions of other bargaining agreements,
if any.
515.8 Dependents eligible for a
Board of Trustees Honor Award shall receive appropriate recognition but shall
not be entitled to cash equivalent payment in addition to regular benefits
received under this policy.
515.9 Dependent children of
full-time employees who have retired qualify for free tuition if all the
following conditions are met:
1) The employee was employed
full-time at the college for at least five years
2) This benefit is
exercised within five years of the employee’s retirement
3) The employee has
met all the requirements for retirement by the state of
4) The child has not
reached his/her 24th birthday.
515.10 Continuing
Education classes are intended to break even or make money. Employees are
required to pay tuition or use professional development money to attend the
class. In the event there is sufficient tuition from paid enrollees to
cover the cost of providing the class, the tuition will be waived.
