NON-EXEMPT EMPLOYEES SICK
LEAVE POLICY
-
- It shall be the policy
of the Bay de Noc Community College Board of Trustees to authorize 4 hours of
sick leave for each completed bi-weekly period, equivalent to 13 workdays
annually for full-time non-exempt employees. Sick leave may accumulate up to
130 workdays, the time allotted for short-term disability.
PROCEDURE:
703.1
Each new employee shall
begin accumulating sick leave upon employment.
a. Five (5) days of sick leave shall be
placed into the short-term disability bank within the first three (3) years of
employment. Employees will be notified when the five (5) day assessment is
made. If necessary, employees shall be assessed annually for the number of
days necessary to keep the short-term disability bank solvent.
b. Employees must use the accumulated sick
leave, plus any annual vacation accumulation to cover time lost at work due to
illness or injury. If the employee terminates employment prior to the
end of the fiscal year, he/she must repay the college for any sick days
used over the accumulated number of sick days.
c. In the event that
an employee needs to use more sick time than they have accumulated, they are
able to borrow time from the short-term disability bank.
This will be done
with the authorization of the appropriate supervisor and the Vice President for
Administrative Services. Short-term disability (sick leave bank) may not be
used for leave (FMLA) resulting from a family member’s illness or disability.
Time borrowed from the sick bank must be
paid back.
d. Should it be necessary for an employee to
be away from work for an extended period of time, that time can be no longer
than a combination of accrued sick & vacation time and, if necessary use of the
short-term disability bank, equal to 130 work days.
703.2
Should it be necessary to miss work due to
sudden illness or injury, please notify your supervisor as soon as it is
reasonably possible.
703.3
After two weeks of continuous sick leave,
sick leave days or vacation days will not accumulate while the employee is on
that sick leave.
703.4
At
any time, the college may request a doctor’s certificate as to the validity of
the sick leave.
703.5 In
cases of short-term disability leave, an employee must provide the college
with medical assurance that he/she is physically and mentally fit to return to
work.
703.6
Sick leave is not to be
used except as defined below:
a. Sickness or injury resulting in the
temporary disability of the employee or a member of his/her immediate family.
b. Additional time off as a result of death, funeral or
estate settlement in the employee’s immediate family.
c. Medical/dental appointments, which cannot be scheduled
outside of normal working hours.
d. Emergency closing of the college’s operations due to
weather and/or mechanical failure.
703.7
Excessive use of sick leave shall be construed
as physical inability to perform assigned job responsibilities and steps
should be taken for separation.
703.8
No allowance will be made for sickness or any
other compensable type of absence occurring during a scheduled holiday or
vacation.
703.9
If an employee is absent because of illness or injury on one or both days
surrounding a designated holiday or vacation, the college reserves the right
to verify the reason for the absence.
