708 WEATHER OR MECHANICAL FAILURE POLICY
It shall be the policy of the Bay de Noc Community College Board of Trustees to authorize leave due to weather or mechanical failure. Because of concerns for the safety of college students and staff, extreme regional weather or campus mechanical failure conditions may be sufficient reason for the closing of the college or the postponement of classes.
PROCEDURE:
708.1 When, in the President's judgment, extreme weather conditions affect the majority of the currently enrolled students, classes may be postponed or cancelled, as outlined in the extreme weather and mechanical failure kit.
Faculty members are in the best position to determine how lost time from classes must be accommodated to ensure completion of the course objectives. To this end, each course syllabus should include a procedure in the event classes must be missed due to weather or other conditions. A statement regarding additional class time and/or assignments will allow flexibility in deciding how to best handle the circumstances. Students are not expected to jeopardize their safety in traveling to classes. A reasonable effort to be present is expected.
Community organizations using the college facilities shall be responsible for contacting the media concerning cancellations.
708.2 On a day when classes are postponed, college employees are expected to report to work as soon as their individual circumstances allow. All employees unable to report to work will be charged up to a day's sick leave.
708.3 In very rare circumstances, the college may be totally closed by the President. However, priority personnel who report to work as requested by their supervisor will be compensated at two (2) times the normal rate of pay or take compensatory time as the supervisor determines appropriate. Sick leave will not be charged to employees under these circumstances.
