News

The Bay College West Speaker Series “Community Voices” continues on Thursday, November 8, 2018, 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM (Central Time), in Fornetti Hall.  Admission is free and all ages are welcome.

This month will feature Keith and Jayna Huotari, presenting “Samuel Bassett: Iron Mountain’s Last Surviving Civil War Veteran.” Local researchers and longtime students of Civil War history, the Huotaris will speak about the curious and fascinating story of Samuel Bassett, who along with his wife, Catherine, became beloved and revered residents of Iron Mountain.  The Huotaris will share their findings of the Bassetts through photographs, newspaper articles, and other documentation.  A chance jogging encounter with Samuel Bassett’s headstone in Iron Mountain’s Cemetery Park five years ago prompted them to ask, “Who was this man, and how would a Massachusetts Civil War soldier come to be buried here?”

The December Community Voices presentation will be Thursday, December 13, 2018, when Margo Recla-Juedes will speak about Winter Wellness.  For more information on “Community Voices” visit the Bay College West Facebook page, or contact Linda Varda at 906-302-3002, or Email bcwevents_FROM_BAY_COLLEGE.
