Bay Film Series Announces Winter 2019 Schedule

News

Our race to the Oscars continues!  The Bay Film Series at Bay College once again celebrates the art of film-making, showing the best in international, documentary, independent cinema.  This year’s Bay Film Series roster is filled with award-winning, critically-acclaimed, audience-approved movies.  The Academy of Motion Pictures will announce their nominations on January 22nd.

On Thursday, January 24th, we will begin with Beautiful Boy.  The screenplay is based upon the best-selling memoirs of the Sheffs, which chronicle the son’s spiraling battle with drug addiction.  Timothee Chalamet is leading the cast with nominations for Best Supporting Actor for the Screen Actors Guild Awards, BAFTAs, and Golden Globes. Kevin Maher from the UKs Times says, “Beautiful Boy is that rare cinematic artifact, a film that purports to be about one thing (in this case, addiction), but when you scrape away the surface dazzle, is really about everything.”

Our second film on February 7th, The Green Book is already winning awards, including Golden Globes for Best Screenplay, Best Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Actor (Marhershala Ali), and Best Director.  Based upon the memoirs of Tony Lip, the movie tells the story of Dr. Don Shirley, an internationally acclaimed African-American pianist, who goes on a concert tour in the Jim Crow South.  He hires the Italian-American Lip, played by Viggo Mortensen, as his driver and companion, and the two men must work together to survive the dangerous racism of the time.

We continue on February 21st with Mary Queen of Scots which explores the conflicts between Mary of Scotland and England’s Elizabeth the First.  Queen of France at age 16 and a widow by 18, Mary fought to keep her power in a male-dominated court and country, unleashing conspiracies and power struggles that will rock the security of both nations.  Margot Robbie was nominated for Best Supporting Actress by the Screen Actors Guild.

We finish up our winter season on April 18th with If Beale Street Could Talk which the Chicago Tribune calls “pure cinema.”  Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times agrees: “This movie works as a timeless romance, a family drama, a legal thriller and a poignant social commentary.   A great American novel has been turned into a great American film.”  Regina King won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress.

All Film Series movies are shown in Bay College’s Besse Center Theater at 7 PM in Escanaba.  Tickets may be purchased for $5.00 or $2.00 for students either at the door or online.
