Bay College Honors Outstanding Educators

Bay College honored its 2019 Outstanding Full-Time Educators at an awards dinner held on April 23. Don Johnson Agency/MEEMIC Insurance sponsored the Outstanding Educator Awards. To receive consideration for the award, faculty were nominated by a colleague, student, or someone from the community. The primary focus of this award is to acknowledge faculty’s commitment to education and excellence in service to others. 

Brian Black

Brian Black has been a biology and environmental science instructor at Bay College since 2000. He also serves presently as the Math Science Division Chair. Black holds a dual Ph.D. from Michigan State University in Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, and Behavior, and in Botany. He earned a BS in Biology from the University of Maine, and a BS in American Institutions from the University of Wisconsin. He also holds certificates from the University of Wisconsin in Integrated Liberal Studies, and Environmental Studies. In a previous career, he earned a Vocational Diploma in Wood Technics from Fox Valley Technical College, and built custom furniture in Minneapolis MN.

Joyce King

Joyce King is a Computer Information Systems Instructor at the college, a position she has held since 1988. During her tenure, King developed most of the current CIS curriculum including the CIS: Software/Network Support degree, the CIS: Programming & User Support degree, and the Computer Applications Certificate. She has taught over 15 different CIS courses and currently serves as the program leader for the CIS department. She was named Distinguished Faculty in 2002 and Outstanding Educator in 2011. King began her education at Bay College as part of the first cohort of students admitted into the Data Processing degree program. She graduated from Bay with an Associate in Arts degree and transferred to Northern Michigan University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Education, graduating Summa Cum Laude. She was named the Business Education Scholar and the Outstanding Graduate from the Walker L Cisler School of Business at NMU. She also received the NBEA Award of Merit. King went on to earn a Master of Science in Career and Technical Education from Ferris State University, graduating with Highest Distinction. She holds Microsoft Office Master Certification and IC3 Digital Literacy Certification. King strives to stay current by attending professional conferences, trainings, and workshops. She recently attended the Cengage Computing Experience: VIP 2018 National Conference. She also recently completed training in Security Fundamentals, SQL Querying Fundamentals, Advanced Word and Advanced Access.

Matthew Krynicki

Dr. Matthew P. Krynicki is currently the physics, engineering mechanics and astronomy instructor at Bay College. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI with a major in physics and minors in mathematics and English literature in May of 1993. He then went on to pursue his Ph.D. in physics at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, graduating in May of 2006. His graduate research focused on ground-based measurements of upper-atmospheric vertical winds and temperatures at altitudes of ~100 – 300 kilometers and on space-based measurements of upper-atmospheric composition disturbances associated with these vertical winds. Essentially, he is an expert on the Aurora Borealis, that is, the Northern Lights. He has been teaching physics at Bay since August of 2006.
