Bay Film Series Announces Change to December Title

On December 5th, The Bay Film Series will show the film, The Farewell, replacing the originally-scheduled This is Not Berlin.

The Farewell, based upon director Lulu Wang’s family experiences, tells the story of a Chinese-American family who plans a fake wedding in China.  Matriarch Nai Nai (Zhao Shuzhen) has been diagnosed with inoperable cancer, and the family plans the nuptial subterfuge to hide this information from her while still giving everyone a chance to see her one last time.    Kyle Buchanan of The New York Times recently averred that Shuzhen should be considered for Best Supporting Actress calling her “Best Supporting Grandma.”

The film also stars Awkwafina in her first dramatic role.  The movie’s opening  announcement say that it is “based on an actual lie,” and according to RogerEbert.com, the film achieves “a universality and a resonance through its vivid depiction of a family in the midst of crisis.”

Upcoming showings:  The Winter schedule for The Film Series in not complete yet, but two titles have been scheduled: Harriet, the story of Harriet Tubman, for Jan 23, and Parasite, this year’s runaway Korean hit, for Feb 27.  More information will be available soon.

The Bay Film Series at Bay College celebrates the art of film-making, showing the best in international, documentary, and independent cinema.  All Film Series movies are shown in Bay College’s Besse Center Theater at 7 PM in Escanaba.  Tickets are $5 and are available at the box office or can be purchased online.  Students with valid ID can get a reduced admission charge of $2.
