Luncheon Honors the Community College 2020 All-Michigan Academic Team

The annual Phi Theta Kappa Awards Luncheon, honoring the 2020 All-Michigan Academic Team, was held on Monday, March 9 at the Kellogg Center in East Lansing. Students were selected based on academic achievement, community service involvement, and leadership accomplishment. The State Academic Teams are a division of the Academic All-American Team for Community, Technical and Junior College Students, an international program sponsored annually by Phi Theta Kappa and the American Association of Community Colleges.

Bay College congratulates Eli Faymonville and Marissa Maino; they are Bay College's representatives on the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) All-Michigan Academic Team. Maino was recognized at the luncheon and will also be recognized during Bay College’s Commencement ceremony. Faymonville was unable to attend the luncheon.

Marissa Maino will graduate this spring with an Associate in Applied Science degree in Business. She has worked hard to maintain a 4.0 GPA while in college. Marissa was part of the inaugural Norse Women’s Basketball team when she suffered a career ending injury. The Ishpeming native did not let this halt her academic plans, she was able to continue her coursework while recovering and rehabbing from surgery, all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. Business instructor Brent Madalinksi said of Maino, “She maintained contact with the class at all times. Her quality work, submitted on time, was used numerous times as a role model example throughout the semester.” In the fall of 2020, she plans to broaden her horizons and obtain a degree in the medical field at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Cindy Carter, Dean of Business, Technology and Workforce Development, accompanied Maino at the awards luncheon and said, “It’s an honor to have a student like Marissa represent Bay College alongside this elite group of community college students. We are happy Marissa selected Bay College and we’ll continue to support her as she transitions on to NWTC.” Outside of school and work, Marissa loves to volunteer with her therapy dog, Stewie, at local nursing homes and community health fairs. Working with Stewie, Marissa has confidence that she is bringing joy to those they visit. In addition to school and volunteer work, Marissa loves to spend time with her family and friends.

The Michigan luncheon is held every year in conjunction with the Michigan Community College Association (MCCA). Besides the All-Michigan Academic Team members, luncheon attendees included community college presidents, administrators and trustees, state legislators, and Phi Theta Kappa advisors.

Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, MS, is the largest honor society in American higher education with 1,250 chapters on two-year and community college campuses in all 50 of the United States and throughout the world. More than two million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918, with approximately 100,000 students inducted annually.
