Bay College Offers New Social Work Degree Program

In response to the growing need for more Social Workers in the Upper Peninsula, Bay College is converting the Human Service degree program into an Associate of Arts Concentration in Social Work degree program.  Coursework for this degree program will begin in Fall 2020.  Students in this program will have a more seamless pathway to bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work along with being better aligned with national and state trends.

“We are excited to bring the new social work program into existence, and we are especially pleased to be offering a clear pathway for students to transfer with a social work degree,” commented Dr. Amy Reddinger, Dean of Arts & Sciences at Bay College.

“A key factor impacting the decision to make this conversion is the realization that a 2-year Human Service degree was not meeting the modern needs of the field or related fields. This was due to educational and occupational changes since creation of the program. In fact, the Career Outlook statistics showed us that a significant amount of jobs that a two-year Human Service graduate is considered qualified for, someone with a high school diploma and/or related Associate degree would also be qualified for. Therefore, we found it more appropriate to guide those students toward a transfer degree through which they will have new future career opportunities,” states Dan Hall, Instructor for Bay College.
