Bay College's Workforce Training Division is offering a new healthcare certificate program in phlebotomy, which is the process of drawing and preparing blood for medical testing, transfusion, and donations.  Bay's popular nurse aide training will also be offered during the spring and summer to allow students planning on entering the practical nursing program to gain their certification prior to the fall semester.

 

Applications for the phlebotomy program will be accepted through April 16 and up to 15 candidates will be chosen.  Successful completers of the 140-hour training program are eligible to take the Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) certification exam through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), which is the world's largest organization for pathologists and laboratory professionals. Earning this certification demonstrates to employers that you are fully competent to fulfil the duties as a phlebotomist, and is the preferred credential by healthcare employers.

 

The phlebotomy program starts April 23rd and will be held Wednesday evenings and all day on Saturdays through May 21. Training will be held in Escanaba with clinical sites available throughout the Upper Peninsula. Cost of the training is $1,500, which includes all instructional material.

 

Nurse Aide Training is scheduled monthly though August, and is a state approved 96-hour training program. Successful completers are eligible to take their certification exam offered through the state of Michigan. Cost of this training is $825, plus the cost of books and supplies.

 

Funding may be available for these programs through the MiLEAP and MiREACH grants administered by Michigan Works, and anyone interested is highly encouraged to contact their local Michigan Works offices to see if they qualify.
