Bay College and Macomb Community College have announced a new partnership for a Workforce Training Program.  The Marine Maintenance Technician program is 7-week training held at Macomb Community College, located in Warren, Michigan with Bay College students attending in a Live Online format.

Michigan has more than 3,200 miles of shoreline, a boating industry generating about $7.4 billion a year, and the second highest number of registered boaters in the country.  What it doesn’t have are enough trained marine technicians to repair and maintain all the boats sailing on the Michigan waterways.  The Marine Maintenance Technician Program is the only program like it in southeastern Michigan and is now available in the Upper Peninsula.  This program was developed in collaboration with the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC), the Michigan Boating Industries Association, and local marinas.

The seven-week program provides specialized training in the repair and maintenance of outboard and inboard engines, as performed in marinas and other watercraft service facilities.  Along with a certificate of completion, students will earn an OSHA 10-hour Maritime Safety Card, First Aid and CPR Certification, and will be eligible to sit for the ABYC Marine Maintenance Technician certification. Students will attend live online classes along with a cohort of students attending at Macomb.  A hands-on 40-hour Marine Engines course will be taught at Macomb where students will gain valuable knowledge working on Mercury Marine Engines.  Funding for training and travel/lodging may be available for those who qualify.
