Bay College Students Win Writing Honors

News

Each year, Bay College and all of Michigan’s community colleges participate in the Liberal Arts Network for Development (LAND) Writing Competition.  During the fall semester, Bay holds its own writing contest.  Current Bay College students were eligible to submit up to two entries in each of two categories: creative nonfiction, fiction, and poetry.  The top two entries in each category were awarded cash prizes and will advance to the state competition.

In the creative nonfiction category, first place was awarded to Mandey Sauer for “The Girl in the Window.”  The second-place prize went to Sarah Gaffney for the essay “The Tale of the Razor Stones.”

In the fiction category, Ayla Polfus took first place for “The Letter.”  The second-place award went to Brady Irving for “Everything is Fine.”

Emily Schaefer’s piece entitled “Girl on Fire” took first place in the poetry category, with second place being awarded to Spencer Robinson for the poem “It Is You I Will Take.”

The winning entries will not only advance to the state competition, but they will also be published this spring in Serendipity, Bay College’s annual literary and art magazine.

In addition to the above winners, judges also awarded honorable mention to the following entries: “Fool Me Twice,” by Gabriel Harrison; “The 8th Rung,” by Brooke Gannon; “The Chain,” by Janine Gregorski-Mohr; and “In Spite of God,” by Spencer Robinson.
