Bay College Students Offered Diversity in Education Class

News

Students at Bay College completed Diversity in Education, a new course offered by Bay College.  This course provides future teachers with tools to implement equal opportunities for all students in their classrooms, while encouraging a commitment to educating all learners.  Students learn to adapt subject matter to learner diversity.  Furthermore, students study best practices regarding learning, motivation, classroom management, and teaching strategies, while considering diversity, equity, learning styles and needs.

Bay College offers three foundational education courses for students interested in teaching at the K-12 level.  Field work in educational settings is embedded in all three courses, giving students hands-on experiences to prepare them for the teaching profession.  The field work for this new course is structured to take place in a variety of diverse learning environments which this semester included The Learning Center, The Escanaba Student Success Center, Career and Technical Education courses at the Delta-Schoolcraft Intermediate School District, and Nah Tah Wahsh Public School Academy.

"All of the schools were exceedingly welcoming and excited to have Bay students observe what makes their schools unique," explained Danielle Wotchko, the instructor of the course.  "The feedback that I have received thus far has been overwhelmingly positive, and I hope that the relationship between the schools and Bay will continue for years to come."

Education courses are offered virtually or online, broadening their reach and meeting student and community needs.  “Bay College is working to meet the needs of our students and local educational partners.  We are committed to building a pipeline of exceptional, diverse teachers with 21st century educational skills and knowledge,” said Jessica Van Slooten, Dean of Arts and Sciences at Bay College.
