According to Bay College freshman Anna Hilberg, adjusting to life as a college student has taken her a while. Still, she said her first few months at Bay have been going smoothly on the whole.

As a Bark River-Harris Senior High School student, Anna had the chance to tour Bay’s campus twice. These tours, along with some other factors, motivated her to sign up for classes at the college later on.

“It’s just close to where I live, and I always wanted to go to college. Along with that, everyone’s so nice here,” she said.

In 2022, Anna graduated from high school in Harris. After working at the fairgrounds during the summer and taking a semester off during the fall, she began studying at Bay during the winter 2023 semester.

Anna said she had a “downslide” earlier in the semester. However, she recovered thanks to her grandmother’s emotional support and the academic assistance she received through the TRIO Student Support Services Program.

“I’ve been going to tutoring, so that helped a lot,” she said.

Now that Anna has had a chance to adapt to college life, she said her time at Bay has been going well.

“I absolutely love it here. High school was hard, so it’s definitely a change of pace from that,” she said.

Anna’s choice of major was inspired by her family life. She is working towards earning her early childhood education certificate at Bay, which she hopes to complete in four years or so.

“Ever since I was little, I was taking care of my brother and sister. I decided that I might as well make a career out of it, since I’m good at it and I enjoy it,” she said.

After earning this certificate, she plans to turn her attention toward finding a job in her field while staying in the area.

“I’m hopefully going to be working at the Northern Lights YMCA or in a daycare,” Anna said.

Anna said she appreciates everything Bay College has done for her. She also said other people interested in getting their higher education off to a good start could benefit from taking classes at Bay.

“It’s a very good college, and I’d encourage anyone on the fence to try a class,” she said.
