Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging

Empowering campus and the community

Diverse group of hands

Our Mission

The Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) supports and empowers students, faculty, staff, and community members to build trust, increase access, support individuals’ diverse identities, and create spaces for dialog, learning, compassion, and acceptance on our campuses and in the communities we serve.

This work aligns with our institutional mission of student success, community success, and culture of success.

We also believe that this works aligns with and can be improved through our cultural beliefs:

  • I am change
  • Respect
  • Let's talk
  • Feed me
  • Clarify expectations
  • Stay focused

What is DEIB?

The Bay College mission is Student Success, Community Success, Culture of Success, and we believe that the work of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging directly supports this mission. At Bay College we believe that diversity is key to individual success, educational excellence and the advancement of knowledge.

Diversity

Diversity is a term that references differences in human backgrounds. It can include, but is not limited to diversity of race, ethnicity, ability, religion, sexuality, gender identity, age, ideas and belief systems, socio-economic class, nation of origin, and more. In higher education, we have the opportunity and challenge of bringing a diversity of ideas and individuals into the classroom and creating space for complex, nuanced, and productive dialogue.

Equity

Equity is not equality. Equity is focused on insuring that every individual has what they need to be successful and have the outcomes and experiences they aspire to.

Inclusion

A popular way to talk about inclusion is that “all members of the community are invited to the party!” Inclusion reflects directly on our work as an institution to make sure that we are as open and accessible as possible to all members of the community.

Belonging

A sense of belonging means that we have created an institution where everyone feels welcome, seen, and heard.  Creating a sense of belonging is about physical space, learning environments, social and emotional support, and more.

"The work of inclusion and belonging is a 'team lift' and I am honored to share in this work with students, colleagues, and community members who are working to increase the well-being, inclusion, and sense of belonging for all in our community."
