Why History?
Historians study how people in the past shaped the world around them and, long-term, impacted our lives today. They access, organize and evaluate documents such as: newspapers, oral accounts, diaries, public records, and letters. They must determine the validity, accuracy, and relevancy of sources, before use in: museum displays, classrooms, publications, government or private-sector reports, and other types of history-based work.
Historians develop theories to explain past events based on their research. Often, they examine the relationship between past and current events, providing context for modern issues. While most professional historians teach in colleges and universities, many also independently write articles and books. Some historians serve as consultants to editors or on television, film, and stage productions to ensure that past portrayals are accurate. Others with an interest in history enjoy working as genealogists, tracing family stories. Historians also study and help to preserve documents, artifacts, buildings, and other important sites. Some may work for publishing firms, news bureaus, and at federal and state agencies. Many with an interest in history also enter the library, museum, archival, and records-keeping fields.

In addition to the study of history for general-education purposes, students majoring in history or education will benefit from the role modeling of best-practice teaching methods, both online and on campus. Students will learn from a faculty member who is professionally trained and credentialed in the fields of history and education. So, as you can see, studying history is not just about acquiring knowledge of the past. It is about developing important life-skills to empower yourself in the present!
