Surgical Technology (AAS)
Program Details
In this program, a surge tech student is responsible for preparing the patient and the operating room for surgery and hands the instruments to the doctor and other members of the surgical team. The student’s apprentices from the participating hospitals, will begin their five-semester, 62-credit hour program leading to an Associate of Applied Science in Surgical Technology. The graduates will then be ready to take the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting national certification exam.
The Surgical Technology Associate in Applied Science Degree is designed to provide an occupational healthcareer avenue for students without leaving Delta County.

The Surgical Technology Program at Bay College equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary to perform as entry-level Surgical Technologists in diverse healthcare settings. The program combines online didactic instruction through the EPiC Consortium's shared learning platform hosted by MWTEC-MCO with hands-on clinical training at partnering hospitals. Students engage in synchronous virtual classes alongside their clinical education to reinforce learning and build competence. Aligned with national standards, the program ensures graduates are prepared to support surgical teams in various specialties, including orthopedics, cardiovascular, neurovascular, urology, and OB/GYN.
Bay College collaborates with the MCCA EPiC Consortium, a statewide partnership of community colleges, to provide accessible and cost-effective training while maintaining high educational standards. Clinical labs hosted onsite at healthcare facilities reduce program costs, making the program feasible for students across Michigan. The curriculum emphasizes professional growth, focusing on developing attitudes, values, and behaviors essential for success in dynamic surgical environments.
