Janice Barker is an Office Information Systems (OIS) instructor at Bay de Noc Community College, teaching in the Medical Office Specialist and Administrative Assistant degree programs. Ms. Barker earned a Master of Science Degree in Career and Technical Education (Highest Distinction) from Ferris State University. She maintains certification in Medical Office Management from the Practice Management Institute, recently successfully completing a proficiency course and exam in ICD-10 medical coding. She is also certified as a Microsoft Office Specialist in Microsoft Word. Barker was named an Outstanding Fulltime Faculty Educator in 2015, and she was recognized with the TORCH Award in 2014. Ms. Barker was instrumental in gaining designation for the Medical Office Specialist Program as a State-Approved Occupational Program in 2015. She has taught all courses in the OIS programs and has developed new curricula for the Medical Office Specialist, introducing electronic medical record software and electronic coding software to her classes. She has been certified to teach online for many years and is HLC-qualified as an instructor. In real-world experience, she has worked multiple years in a variety of office settings, including medical office management, medical coding and billing, office supervision, and independent contractor services.
