Why Mechatronics & Robotics Systems?
Mechatronics is an interdisciplinary field involving mechanical, electronic, computer, robotic, and control systems. In this program, students will gain the technical knowledge and skills needed to install, repair and maintain electromechanical, fluid power, process control or robotic systems. Students will have the opportunity to do hands-on learning in a grant-funded equipment lab where they will work on models of a multi-stage assembly line. Eligible students can also complete a Co-op or Internship in the area of Mechatronics and Robotics Systems to gain real-world experience that can benefit them in future careers.
For many years, industrial control systems were defined as mechanical or electrical. As computers became more prevalent, the line between a pure mechanical and pure electrical systems became blurred. Almost every mechanical system has electric or computer based controls. The modern industrial worker needs to have a knowledge of each type of system. Even more important, they must know how the interconnections between mechanical, electrical, and computer systems works. The term “mechatronics" is used to describe this broad field. Mechatronics is present in any automated system, from heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to robotic assembly lines.
One basic example of a mechatronics system is the automatic garage door opener. The heart of the system is a mechanical system of gears or pulleys that is driven by an electric motor to open or close the door. Early systems were hardwired to a pushbutton so basically they were simply a mechanical and electrical system. Later, remote wireless controls were added to allow the door to be opened from inside the vehicle. Modern systems are required to have sensors installed that will prevent the door from closing if an object is in the way. The newest feature to be added is control of the door via a cell phone application that literally allows control of the door from anywhere that you have an Internet connection. So the modern garage door opener is a mechatronics system that includes electrical, mechanical, and computer technologies.
Why Bay College?
Students in Bay College’s mechatronics program will learn the basic principles and skills to install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair mechatronic systems. Courses taken will cover the fundamentals of robotics, fluid power, basic machine tool operation, electrical motors, motor control systems and programmable logic controllers. Students will also work on models of a multi-stage assembly line, including building to print, configuring the hardware, and programming the operation.

The Mechatronics and Robotics Systems Associate Degree is articulated for smooth transfer to the Electronics Engineering Technology Bachelor of Science degree at Michigan Technological University.
