The Life-Changing Power of Scholarships

Every year, Bay College awards $400,000.00 in scholarships to nearly 300 incoming and returning students that meet specified criteria. For many, a scholarship can be life changing. Hanna Bowles, the 2019 Board of Trustees Elite Scholarship recipient, provided insight on how receiving a scholarship has impacted her.

Hanna always knew she wanted to attend Bay College. She was attracted to the smaller class sizes and was undecided on what she wanted to do and where she wanted to go. With being awarded a scholarship, Hanna has been able to put all of her time into her school work and be the best student she can be. Bowles state, “It has alleviated so much stress and pressure of choosing a career path right away. With the help of this scholarship, I’ve been able to take courses I wouldn’t have had a chance of taking before.” Bay is the perfect place to explore potential career options in an affordable way.

Hanna now has the reassurance that all of her hard work in high school did not go unnoticed. This scholarship has boosted her confidence in every area of her life. “I now know that I’m able to accomplish anything I put my mind to, as long as I put in the time and energy to succeed,” states Bowles.

One of Hanna’s favorite quotes is, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take” by hockey star Wayne Gretzky, meaning if someone is contemplating applying for a scholarship because they think they won’t get it, they are only limiting themselves. “When my parents and guidance counselor suggested I apply for this particular scholarship, I never imagined actually receiving it.”

The scholarship program at Bay College is supported by contributions and gifts from community organizations, businesses, Bay College employees, families, foundations, and individual donors via the Bay College Foundation.
