Each year, Bay College selects an Outstanding Graduate from each of the six divisions at the college.  The graduate is selected by their instructors for their academic excellence, leadership, and community service.

Hailey Derocher was selected as the 2022 Outstanding Graduate for the Arts & Letters Division, with the award being sponsored by Bink’s Coca-Cola Bottling Company, the Bay College Faculty Association, and the Bay College Foundation.

Hailey started her studies at Bay College as a dual enrolled student.  After graduating from Mid Pen High School in 2020, she began her full-time studies at Bay College.  Hailey graduated with an Associate in Arts Degree in Liberal Arts from Bay College in December 2021 with an impressive 3.8 GPA.

During her time at Bay College, she was a tutor, Supplemental Instruction leader, Co-President of the Aspiring Educators Club, and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. She also served as the writing editor for Serendipity, the college’s annual publication that features student art and writings.

When reflecting upon her time at Bay, Hailey stated, “Bay College supported me in many ways throughout my journey from high school, to college, and beyond.  I was able to get a head start on my college degree through Bay's dual enrollment program, save a substantial amount of money while earning my associate's degree, and become well-prepared for my next steps at a larger university.  In addition, I found some of my closest friends and biggest supporters in my classmates, co-workers, and instructors at Bay College.”

Jennifer McCann, Bay College Instructor, stated, “Hailey never missed a deadline and was a responsible and conscientious student.  I looked forward to reading Hailey’s work because I knew it would be engaging and a pleasure to read.  She was receptive to feedback and strived to produce the best product possible.”

Hailey is currently pursuing a degree in Secondary Education from Northern Michigan University.  Her goal is to teach high school English in the Upper Peninsula.  Her future plans also include taking over a family business, Kenbuck Resort, from her grandparents.
