John Lewandowski, 2021 Outstanding Staff at Bay College.

Bay College honors John Lewandowski, Manager of Facilities Support Services, as one of its recipients of the Outstanding Staff Award.  Lewandowski began working at Bay College in 2011 as fill-in custodian, and was promoted to full-time custodian in 2015. He then was promoted in 2020 to Manager of Facilities Support Services. Lewandowski holds an Associates in Applied Science and an Associates in Arts from Bay College and a Bachelor's of Science in Applied Workplace Leadership from Northern Michigan University.

As Manager of Facilities Support Services, John is charged with oversight of all aspects of the work of custodial personnel, and managing the Custodial Services budget. This responsibility includes assigning regular work schedules and assuming responsibility for the cleanliness and safe condition of the buildings.

Lewandowski’s nominator states, “John has been supervising students for over five (5) years now and I am constantly amazed at how supportive he is of them. He also works to teach them how to become productive adults. There were many times he had student workers who needed additional support. He gives students options for community resources, campus support, and looks for opportunities to give students extra hours. His door is always open to his students, listens to their concerns, and turns them to potential solutions.”

Lewandowski was instrumental during the pandemic on measuring seats, moving furniture and setting up a cleaning schedule for his sanitizing crew to ensure that all classrooms get cleaned appropriately after each class and before the next class comes in. The efficient process contributes greatly to how safe staff, faculty and students feel when they are on campus.

Vice President of Operations, Christine Williams, said of Lewandowski, “John’s attention to detail, depth of knowledge and skill, along with his caring approach to everyone make him an exceptional leader and an outstanding employee.”

Any Bay College employee, Board member, student, alumni, or community member may nominate a full-time or regular part-time exempt or non-exempt employee for the Bay College Outstanding Staff Award. These individuals must have completed three years of employment at Bay College. Nominees are judged on their job knowledge, respect and enthusiasm toward colleagues, students, and community members, creating a positive influence within the work environment, and collaboratively working with colleagues and staff.
