The Bay Film Series Fall 2023 Movie Schedule:

Sept 21 - Past Lives

In a movie that NPR called “the most affecting love story in ages,” two childhood friends from South Korea reconnect for a fateful week in New York.  NPR adds, “Past Lives is both achingly romantic and earnestly philosophical.”  This heartrending romance examines themes of destiny, life-choices, and love.  James Berardinelli of ReelViews confirms the film is “quietly powerful – an understated examination of longing, connection, and unconsummated love.”  This film is on many experts’ Top 5 lists for Oscar nominations.  A must see!

Oct 19 – Black Ice

Everyone knows that hockey is a vital aspect of Canadian identity.  But unknown to most is how internal racism has affected players of color, denying them opportunity and entry into the sport throughout its history.  This Canadian documentary uses interviews, history, news footage, and more to weave history to today’s NFL.  RogerEbert.com calls the film “an icebreaking expose.”

Nov 9 – Jules

This underrated sci-fi comedy, containing an all-star cast lead by Ben Kingsley, combines UFOs, ETs, and OAPs.  Rotten Tomatoes says, “What follows is a funny, wildly inventive ride as three neighbors find meaning and connection later in life -- thanks to this unlikely stranger.”   AARP Movies for Grownups says the film ´accomplishes what few current films do: a sweet, simple sense of wonder.

Dec 7 – The League

The second of our sports documentaries this semester, The League, according to The Los Angeles Times, is “equal parts tribute and lament, as complicated as this country.”

According to Rotten Tomatoes, this film “celebrates the dynamic journey of Negro League baseball's triumphs and challenges through the first half of the twentieth century. The story is told through previously unearthed archival footage and never-before-seen interviews with legendary players like Satchel Paige and Buck O'Neil -- whose early careers paved the way for the Jackie Robinson era -- as well as celebrated Hall of Famers Willie Mays and Hank Aaron who started out in the Negro Leagues. From entrepreneurial titans Cumberland Posey and Gus Greenlee, whose intense rivalry fueled the rise of two of the best baseball teams ever to play the game, to Effa Manley, the activist owner of the Newark Eagles and the only woman ever admitted to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, The League explores Black baseball as an economic and social pillar of Black communities and a stage for some of the greatest athletes to ever play the game, while also examining the unintended consequences of integration.”
