Bay College and the Diversity Committee are excited to  announce a special Black History event, celebrating the life and legacy of the incomparable Louis Armstrong. This event, “Satchmo the Great: The Life and Significance of Louis Armstrong” will take place at the Escanaba Campus Library on Monday, February 12 at 2pm ET, and in the Lower Commons at the Iron Mountain Campus on Tuesday, February 13 at 2pm CT. This event is free and open to the public.

Louis Armstrong, affectionately known as “Satchmo,” was not only a jazz genius, but also a crossover media superstar whose influence transcended musical boundaries. Recognized as one of the most influential people of the 20^th century by Time Magazine, Armstrong’s journey from poverty to worldwide fame is a testament to his resilience and talent. His music has touched the hearts of millions, and his legacy continues to inspire generations.

Phil Lynch, an award-winning educator, author, and performer of jazz and the Great American Songbook, will lead the event. With over 30 years of experience inspiring and entertaining audiences, Lynch is uniquely qualified to delve into the life and significance of Louis Armstrong. His book “Live Like Louis,” which offers life lessons based on Armstrong’s teachings, was met with critical acclaim, and became an Amazon Top 20 book upon its release.
