Bay Film Series Announces Winter 2024 Schedule

The Bay Film Series at Bay College, celebrating the art of filmmaking, announces its upcoming film schedule for the Winter 2024 semester.

All Film Series movies are shown in the Bay College Besse Auditorium, 2001 N. Lincoln Rd, Escanaba, at 7 PM ET. Admission: $2/K-Bay | $5/Adult. Tickets are available at the Besse Center Box Office or online, www.baycollege.tix.com. K-Bay students and employees of the College can purchase their tickets in-person with a valid ID.

February 15 – Feeding Tomorrow

“We have a broken food system,” says the narrator of this important documentary. “We all have the power to make positive change in the world, and food is at the center of that change.” Fresh from film festivals around the world and shown at COP27, the UN Climate Change Conference, this film examines ecosystem destruction, food chains, climate change, and more.

February 29 – American Fiction

One of this year’s most highly regarded films, American Fiction stars Jeffery Wright as Monk, a novelist angered by the media’s ability to reduce people to simplistic stereotypes. He writes a book to mock such things, but his book is a hit, sending him into the heart of the issue he is fighting. The Detroit News says Wright “is magnetic in the lead role: commanding, flawed, vulnerable, relatable. American Fiction is his movie and will likely (and deservedly) land him his first Oscar nomination.

This movie is shown in conjunction with Bay College’s Diversity Committee’s celebration of Black History month. Please note that this film date may change after the Oscar nominations come out. Check the Bay College website to verify the date.

March 14 – Barbie

Barbie is a 2023 fantasy comedy film directed by Greta Gerwig, based on the Barbie dolls from Mattel. The film stars Margot Robbie (Barbie) and Ryan Gosling (Ken) and follows the pair on a journey of self-discovery through both Barbieland and the real world, after going through an existential crisis. Having won an abundance of Awards, Barbie most recently took home the Golden Globe Award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement (2024).

The Bay College Library and Diversity Committee collaborated with the Bay Film Series to show Barbie, in honor of Women’s History Month. This film will be shown free for all movie-goers.

April 11 – The Taste of Things

The Bay Film Series is thrilled to be showing this year’s French submission to the Oscars for Best International Film. Starring Juliette Binoche (Chocolat), the film examines the “love story” of two chefs, as one pours his feelings for his reluctant colleague into soaring, imaginative dishes. The Wall Street Journal enthuses, “Lingering on the tongue like a sip of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the film leaves one feeling a little drunk, desperately hungry and entirely alive.”

The Bay Film Series, located on the beautiful campus of Bay College in Escanaba, showcases the art of film-making, focusing on independent, foreign, and local movies as well as current documentaries. For almost 30 years, we've been programing "art house" titles that aren't often shown in smaller cities. Our "Race to the Oscars" is an annual event.
